What to Expect
How to prepare for the lactation consultation:
Please try and feed your baby 2 hours prior to visit. If this isn't possible and baby becomes hungry close to visit, please try to do a partial feed.
Please feel free to bring your breastfeeding pillow, although we do have several you may use. If you are having trouble with your pump, please bring it to the appointment so we can troubleshoot. One support person is welcome to accompany you, but please no siblings!
OUR OFFICE ADDRESS is 1466 Route 88, Suite E in Brick, New Jersey. Parking and the entrance to the building are in the rear. Forms must be completed before the visit. If you do not have access to the internet, please let us know. Please arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before your appointment time.
During a bodywork session... You or your child will be lying on a padded massage table in loose comfortable clothing. Using a soft touch, which is generally no greater than 5 grams (about the weight of a nickel), the therapists will be using subtle palpating and treatment techniques that support the wisdom of your body as it finds its own path to healing and wellness. The therapist's hands will evaluate the craniosacral and fascial system by gently feeling various locations of the body to check for ease of motion, tightness and the rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid pulsing around the brain and spinal cord. The brain’s ability to expand and contract, which allows for the cerebral spinal fluid to be sent throughout the body, will also be evaluated. Secondly, tightness is released not only in the craniosacral region but in the soft tissue areas as well that surround the central nervous system. Once this is achieved, the body then shows where else tightness needs to be released and they will follow to support that release and healing. Children may be lying on the floor, sitting up, or even moving around. Favorite toys or objects of comfort are great to bring along but we do have toys in the office as well. You may feel a sensation of floating or letting go. After a session, clients often feel deeply relaxed, like they have had a deep sleep even though they were awake during the treatment. Children may sleep through the treatment while others may be alert and even crawling around. Older children are usually comfortable lying on the table and relaxing. Children may be silent or vocal or sometimes cry. After your session: Immediately after a session most people feel blissfully relaxed. A reduction in pain or an increase in function and range of motion may happen immediately or gradually happen over the next few days or weeks. There may also be some general aches and pains that come and go for a few days after the session. Other people may feel a little emotional for a day or so after their session. Any uncomfortable sensations are temporary and are a part of your body releasing old patterns and tension which should not last for long.

Will I receive a care plan after my visit? Is there continued communication? At Togethernest, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care and support. If time permits, the lactation specialists will give you a written care plan at the conclusion of your visit. Additionally, we always follow up by sending an in-depth electronic version of your care plan that includes helpful links and resources. Lactation offers free messaging within our electronic medical record portal for 30 days after the last visit. The bodywork providers encourage follow-up texting and want to hear from patients after their visit. Our goal is to make sure you feel supported and informed every step of the way!

What is the difference between breastfeeding medicine and lactation consultations?Breastfeeding medicine providers utilize their medical training to address complex problems facing lactating parents and their babies. As a PA, Chaya can order labs, imaging and prescribe medication when necessary. It is also within her scope as a PA to diagnose things such as tongue tie etc. Lactation consultants are experts in latching, milk production & management and some have additional training in oral motor function evaluation, bottle refusal, infant reflexes etc. The synergy between these two approaches is crucial to our mission of helping families achieve their unique feeding goals.
